Shipping & returns

Delivery across South Africa in 5 to 7 days. It is free on orders of R750 or more, and a flat R300 below that.

You have the right to cancel within seven days of receiving the goods, without giving a reason, under section 44 of the Electronic Communications and Transactions Act. You pay the direct cost of returning them, which is what section 44(2) provides.

Section 44(3) requires the refund within 14 days of cancellation, and in practice we process it as soon as the goods reach us.

Section 42(2) excludes goods made to your own specifications from the section 44 cooling-off right, so that right does not apply to a made-to-measure screen once we have started making it.

If it arrives faulty, damaged or not as described we put it right at no cost to you.

Electric Mosquito Swatter

A tennis racket shaped bug zapper. Swing it through the air and it takes mosquitoes, flies, fruit flies and gnats mid-flight, which beats waiting for them to land.

It charges over USB, so there are no batteries to buy and nothing to throw away when they die.

There is an LED light in the handle. Mosquitoes are a night problem, and being able to see the one you are chasing is most of the battle.

The surface is safe for people to touch. It emits no chemicals, it is quiet and it has no smell, which is why it suits a bedroom or a child's room where a spray does not.

It is waterproof and easy to wash, so cleaning it is a rinse rather than a job.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does it work?

You swing it through the air like a tennis racket. The electrified grid takes mosquitoes and flies mid-flight rather than waiting for them to land.

How is it powered?

USB rechargeable. There is a charging outlet on the racket.

Do I need batteries?

No, and that is deliberate. Disposable batteries are the thing you never have when you need the racket at midnight.

Is it safe to touch?

Yes. The surface is safe for humans to touch.

Is it safe around children and pets?

It is family and pet safe. It emits no chemicals and there is nothing toxic on it.

Does it use chemicals?

None. That is the main reason people choose one over a spray or a plug-in.

Does it smell?

No. It is odour free, which is why it suits a bedroom where a repellent would be unpleasant.

Is it noisy?

Very quiet, apart from the pop when it connects.

Does it have a light?

Yes, an LED light on the handle.

Why does the light matter?

Mosquitoes are a night problem. Seeing the one you are chasing is most of the battle, and the LED means you are not turning the room light on at 2am.

What insects does it kill?

Mosquitoes, flies, fruit flies, gnats and other flying pests.

Will it work on fruit flies?

Yes. The large surface suits them, because fruit flies are hard to hit individually with anything solid.

How big is the hitting surface?

Large, which is the point of the racket shape. You sweep through the space the insect is flying in rather than aiming at a spot.

Does it leave a mess on the wall?

No, and that is one of the advantages. You take the insect in the air rather than flattening it against paintwork.

Can I wash it?

It is waterproof and easy to wash. Switch it off first and let it dry fully before charging or using it.

How do I clean the grid?

Wipe it down once it is off. Nothing gets stuck in a grid the way it does in a mesh swatter.

How long does the charge last?

The source specification does not state a runtime. In practice a racket like this is drawing power only when it is switched on, so a charge lasts well beyond a normal evening's use.

How long does it take to charge?

The source specification does not give a charge time.

Can I use it outdoors?

Yes. The LED light makes it well suited to a patio or a campsite after dark.

Is it good for camping?

It is one of the better uses for it. No spray in a tent, no smell, and USB charging works off a power bank.

Will it work in a bedroom?

That is the main use. No chemicals, no smell and no noise means you can use it in the room you are about to sleep in.

Is it suitable for a nursery?

It is non-toxic and emits nothing, which is why people choose it over sprays. Keep it out of a child's reach as you would any electrical item.

Do I have to hit them hard?

No. Contact is what matters, not force. A steady sweep works better than a hard swing.

Why do I sometimes miss?

Mosquitoes drift rather than fly straight. Sweep through the space around them rather than aiming at where they are.

Does it work in the dark?

With the LED on, yes. That's what the light is there for.

Is it heavy?

No. It is light enough to swing repeatedly without effort.

Does it replace a fly screen?

No. A screen stops them getting in at all, which is always better. The racket deals with the ones already in the room.

Should I get this or the leather swatter?

Different jobs. The racket is for mosquitoes and small flies in the air at night. The leather swatter is for flies that have landed, and it never needs charging.

Can I leave it plugged in?

Charge it and unplug it, as with any USB device.

What is in the box?

The racket. Charge it over USB before first use.

Using an electric mosquito swatter

Why a racket beats waiting

Few things are as annoying as the whine of a mosquito circling in the dark. You wave, it stops, you settle, and it starts again the moment you relax.

The reason a rolled newspaper fails is that it needs the mosquito to land somewhere you can hit it. A racket removes that condition. You sweep it through the air where the insect is flying, and the large surface means you do not have to be precise about it.

The flash and the pop tell you it connected, and nothing ends up on the paintwork.

Charging rather than batteries

It runs on USB. That sounds like a small detail and it is the difference between a working racket and a dead one.

A device like this lives in a drawer for eleven months and is needed urgently in the twelfth. If it takes disposable batteries, the ones inside are flat and the right size is not in the house. A charge cable, you have. It also works off a power bank, which is why these go camping.

What it does not do

This is the part that decides it for most people.

There's no spray, so nothing settles on the surfaces in the room. There's no residue and no chemical smell, so you can use it in a bedroom minutes before sleeping in it. It is quiet beyond the pop. And the surface is safe for humans to touch, so it is family and pet safe in a way a plug-in vaporiser or an aerosol is not.

In a nursery, a tent or a small bedroom, those absences matter more than raw effectiveness. Treat it as the electrical item it is and keep it out of small hands, but there is nothing on it to worry about.

Using it well

Do not swing hard. Contact is what matters, not force, and a hard swing pushes air ahead of the racket that shoves a light insect out of the way.

Sweep steadily through the space around the mosquito rather than aiming at exactly where it is. Mosquitoes drift rather than fly in straight lines, so the space is a better target than the insect.

Use the LED. Turning the main light on wakes everyone and sends the mosquito to the ceiling. The handle light gives you enough to track one without either.

It is not a substitute for a screen

Worth saying plainly. A window screen stops mosquitoes entering the room at all, which will always beat dealing with them once they are inside. If you are being bitten every night in summer, the screen is the fix and the racket is what handles the ones that got in before you closed up.
